Miami – Real Madrid Unveil a New Identity Under Xabi Alonso’s Leadership
Real Madrid are showing a fresh identity under new head coach Xabi Alonso. A fluid and aggressive style of play has become the hallmark of Los Blancos, who have now advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Madrid secured their spot in the last eight after a narrow 1-0 victory over Juventus in the Round of 16. The only goal of the match came from Gonzalo Garcia, who delivered an impressive performance.
Although the squad initially struggled to adapt, Madrid’s players have gradually come to understand and implement Alonso’s tactical system. This approach stands in sharp contrast to the more pragmatic style used during Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure.
The transformation has earned praise from club legend Guti Hernandez. In a casual pitchside conversation with Alonso after the match against Juventus, Guti expressed his admiration for Madrid’s increasingly dynamic midfield.
“This team is very fluid. Arda Güler and Tchouaméni switch positions effortlessly,” Guti said in an interview with DAZN.
Alonso responded by highlighting the importance of attacking full-backs in his system. He emphasized high pressing as a key element of Madrid’s new approach.
“Once we push forward, the full-backs need to get higher and play more aggressively. We must press, close down spaces, and deny the opposition time on the ball. We can’t afford to play with fear,” Alonso asserted.
